We’ve decorated our family homes with sustainable furniture for the past decade. These are the best brands that are eco-friendly, responsibly sourced, and free of any harsh chemical finishes.
Designing your home can definitely feel like a daunting task — there are so many furniture choices to make, especially when you’re trying to be intentional about what you bring into your space. For those of us who care about the planet and want to support ethical craftsmanship, finding furniture that’s both sustainable and stylish might seem overwhelming at first. But the good news? It’s more doable than ever. Whether you’re furnishing a brand-new space or upgrading a single room, there are a growing number of eco-friendly and affordable furniture options that don’t compromise on design or comfort. From responsibly sourced wooden consoles to low-impact couches, cozy sectionals, and thoughtfully made kitchen seating, today’s sustainable brands are offering beautiful solutions for every style and budget.
Why consider sustainable furniture?
Furniture is often made from natural resources like wood — and when mass produced has devastating deforestation and greenhouse emission impacts. Mindfully selecting sustainable furniture when elevating your space takes the environment into consideration, as sustainable furniture uses eco-friendly materials like reclaimed wood, recycled materials, and bamboo, limiting the need for sourcing new materials. Sustainable furniture is also most often made without toxic materials and harmful chemicals like VOCs, allowing you to keep the health of your indoor environment in check. Because furniture is a long-term investment, it’s even more important to consider sustainable furniture pieces that are ethically and responsibly made, as they can make a significant difference for our homes, our families, and the planet.
What should you look for when shopping sustainable furniture brands?
When shopping sustainable furniture brands, it’s important to look beyond the surface and get familiar with what’s going into each piece — literally. Materials matter a lot here. Look for responsibly sourced woods like FSC-certified oak or walnut, which ensure forests are managed ethically, or reclaimed wood that gives new life to something old. Recycled metals and organic fabrics (like GOTS-certified cotton or OEKO-TEX-certified linens) are also great signs that a furniture brand truly cares about the safety and sustainability of their product. And don’t forget about the finishes — low- or no-VOC paints and stains are safer for your home and the planet. Another tip? Check for transparency. Brands that are truly committed to sustainability usually tell you exactly where their materials come from and how their furniture is made. That level of detail is a green flag.
Price-wise, it’s a bit of a moving target. As tariffs shift and global trade policies evolve, the cost of raw materials and international manufacturing can fluctuate significantly — impacting both small-batch artisans and large retailers. That’s one reason why U.S.-based manufacturing is gaining traction not just as a sustainable option, but a smart one. Local production cuts down on the carbon emissions associated with shipping, allows for stricter labor and environmental oversight, and often shortens the supply chain, reducing delays and markups. While sustainable furniture may come with a higher upfront cost, it’s often made to last for decades, not seasons — so in the long run, you’re investing in quality, ethics, and pieces you won’t need to replace anytime soon.
Certifications are also a great way to ensure your furniture’s nontoxic safety claims are valid. Here are some of the certifications we check for when it comes to sustainable furniture brands:
- GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components found in furniture and other products. The item must use 95% certified organic raw materials to be considered GOTS-certified. GOTS also enforces stringent worker protections to prevent exposure to toxins, and forced or child labor.
- GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your furniture meets some of the world’s most meticiulous and thorough standards for low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and low chemical emissions into indoor air.
- OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is an independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a furniture item is free from harmful substances (includes materials like cotton, synthetic fibres, wood, steel, glass, etc.).
- Fair Trade Certification: A Fair Trade Certification helps protect workers by paying them fair wages, maintaining a transparent supply chain, and using ethically-sourced materials.
- FSC Certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) works to ensure wood and paper products come from responsibly managed forests.
- B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corp organizations are verified through B Lab, a nonprofit that’s dedicated to a fair and sustainable global economy.
- Climate Neutral Certified: Brands that are Climate Neutral Certified measure and offset their entire carbon footprint while implementing ways to reduce future emissions.

What are the most popular furniture styles?
Mid-century modern
Known for its sleek lines, organic curves, and functionality, mid-century modern furniture has made a huge comeback. Originating in the 1940s – 1960s, this style features tapered legs, walnut finishes, and bold color accents. It’s perfect for lovers of retro charm with a modern twist.
Contemporary
Contemporary furniture style is all about what’s trending now, often reflecting a mix of clean lines, subtle curves, and a balanced color palette of neutrals, blacks, and whites. It tends to evolve with the times, borrowing elements from other design styles — like minimalism or industrial — while staying fresh and current. Think low-profile sofas, sleek coffee tables, and an emphasis on open, airy layouts. Materials like glass, metal, and textured fabrics often play a starring role. Contemporary style is perfect for anyone who loves crisp, uncluttered spaces that still feel warm and livable.
Vintage
Vintage furniture pulls inspiration from the past, typically pieces that are at least 20 to 100 years old and full of character. This style celebrates craftsmanship, nostalgia, and time-worn charm — think distressed wood, brass details, floral upholstery, and quirky, one-of-a-kind finds. It’s a favorite for those who love thrifting, upcycling, or storytelling through decor. Incorporating vintage furniture into your home can add a sense of history and personality, making any space feel more layered and soulful.
Cottage/Farmhouse
Cottage and farmhouse styles are rooted in comfort, warmth, and rustic charm. Think cozy slipcovered sofas, distressed wood dining tables, and open shelving filled with everyday treasures. These styles often use soft, muted tones — like creamy whites, soft blues, and sage greens — and embrace natural textures like wood, linen, and wicker. Whether you’re decorating a country home or just want to bring a touch of rural tranquility to your space, cottage and farmhouse furniture exude a welcoming, lived-in feel.
Minimalist
Minimalist furniture style is guided by the “less is more” philosophy, focusing on simplicity, function, and clarity. It features streamlined silhouettes, neutral colors, and zero clutter — every item has a purpose, and nothing is overly ornate. Materials tend to be high-quality and durable, often in natural tones like oak, stone, or soft leather. For those who appreciate serene, clutter-free environments that feel clean and intentional, minimalism offers a calming aesthetic that never goes out of style.
Industrial
Industrial furniture is inspired by old factories and urban lofts, combining raw, unfinished elements like exposed metal, reclaimed wood, and concrete. This style often leans masculine and edgy, with a neutral color palette, visible hardware, and utilitarian design. Furniture tends to be sturdy and functional — like rolling carts, metal stools, or chunky coffee tables. It’s perfect for creating a modern, city-inspired vibe that’s both rugged and refined.
Scandinavian
Scandinavian style (or “Scandi” for short) blends minimalism with cozy, livable touches. Clean lines, light woods, and a soft color palette define this look, with a focus on function, comfort, and natural light. Furniture is typically sleek and simple, often with rounded edges and an understated elegance. Hygge — the Danish concept of cozy contentment — is central here, so expect layered textiles, natural materials, and warm accents that invite relaxation without clutter.
Transitional
Transitional furniture combines the best of both worlds: The timeless elegance of traditional design with the clean, contemporary lines of modern style. It’s a go-to for those who want balance — nothing too ornate, nothing too stark. Neutral color schemes, classic silhouettes, and soft textures make transitional spaces feel harmonious and polished. Think tailored sofas, subtle patterns, and pieces that work well across various rooms and aesthetics.
Bohemian
Bohemian (or “boho”) furniture style is eclectic, artistic, and anything but rigid. It’s all about self-expression — layering colors, patterns, textures, and cultural influences to create a cozy, collected vibe. Furniture often features vintage finds, rattan or bamboo pieces, and handmade details like macramé or carved wood. Whether you’re going for a maximalist, global-inspired look or something more earthy and subdued, boho decor invites creativity and personal flair.
Traditional
Traditional furniture is elegant, timeless, and often influenced by European decor. It features rich woods, ornate detailing, and a classic color palette. Think rolled-arm sofas, carved legs, and formal dining sets — ideal for a more sophisticated, enduring aesthetic.
