What to Look for in Non-toxic Fall Candles
Avoid candles made with paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct. IQ Air reports that to create paraffin, petroleum waste is chemically bleached, deodorized and made into wax.
When burned, paraffin wax can release toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air including acetone, benzene and toluene, which are known carcinogens.
Avoid candles with synthetic fragrances are known for having phthalates. The EWG defines phthalates as a common industrial chemical used in PVC plastics, solvents, and synthetic fragrances and reports that most recently have been linked to asthma and allergies.
Along with clean materials for fall scents I always look for spice scent notes because I think those are great for creating a cozy space with the cool weather.
