For a long time, I’ve been meaning to refresh my underwear collection. As I’ve learned more about the materials in our clothing, including synthetic fibers and the microplastics that can shed, I’ve become more intentional about choosing organic fabrics. Watching The Plastic Detox inspired me to look for ways to reduce plastic in my everyday life, starting with the things I wear closest to my skin.
I live in Colorado, and most days start with the gym, a walk with the dog, and plenty of play with the kids. During work hours, I alternate between sitting and standing in my home office. Once I’m off, it’s back to chasing the kids. With all that movement, I look for underwear that’s stylish, comfortable, supportive, and, most importantly, will last. I also like underwear that reflects my classic, minimalist style.
Why consider organic underwear?
Choosing organic men’s underwear offers a wide range of benefits that go far beyond just comfort — it’s a decision that supports your health, the planet, and the people who make your clothes. Organic underwear, especially when made from certified organic cotton, is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified seeds. This not only helps reduce harmful chemical runoff into waterways and soil, but also lowers your personal exposure to residues that may remain in conventional fabrics. These chemicals, many of which are known irritants or endocrine disruptors, can linger in textiles and be absorbed through the skin, especially in sensitive areas where underwear sits close to the body all day. By choosing organic, you’re minimizing that risk and opting for a cleaner, safer material.
In terms of comfort, organic cotton boxers and briefs are known for their softness, breathability, and durability. What type of underwear is best for fertility?
When it comes to male fertility, underwear choice may seem like a small detail, but it can have a surprisingly significant impact. Fertility is influenced by a variety of lifestyle and environmental factors, and what men wear daily can play a role in either supporting or hindering reproductive health. One of the most critical factors to consider is temperature regulation. Sperm production requires a cooler environment than the body’s core temperature, which is why the testicles are located outside the body in the scrotum. Wearing tight-fitting underwear, such as briefs or compression shorts, can trap heat and raise the temperature in this sensitive area, potentially impairing spermatogenesis (the process of sperm production). For this reason, looser styles like traditional boxers or relaxed boxer briefs are generally recommended, as they allow for better airflow and reduce the risk of overheating.
Fabric choice also plays a vital role. Breathable, natural materials such as organic cotton, bamboo viscose, or hemp are ideal because they wick moisture away from the skin and allow for proper ventilation. Organic fabrics, in particular, are grown without harmful pesticides or chemicals and are often processed without toxic dyes or finishes. A lesser-known but increasingly concerning factor is the potential exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in certain synthetic fabrics and textile treatments. Commonly used synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, and spandex may contain or be treated with phthalates, formaldehyde, perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), and even bisphenol A (BPA) — chemicals known for their ability to interfere with hormonal function. What are the relevant certifications for nontoxic underwear?
When shopping for nontoxic underwear, several trusted certifications can help ensure that the materials used are free from harmful chemicals and produced with human and environmental safety in mind:
- bluesign®: This certification screens chemicals used in textile production to ensure they meet strict safety standards for workers, consumers, and the environment. While bluesign® products may still contain synthetic materials, they are produced under strict guidelines that minimize toxicity and pollution.
- OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: OEKO-TEX is one of the most recognized certifications for textile safety. It means that every part of the garment — down to the thread, elastic, and label — has been tested for over 100 potentially harmful substances, including formaldehyde, heavy metals, azo dyes, and phthalates. If you’re concerned about direct skin contact with toxins or endocrine-disrupting chemicals, this certification is a great starting point.
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): This certification goes a step further by verifying the use of certified organic fibers and ensuring environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. For a product to be GOTS-certified, it must contain at least 70% organic fibers, and the entire supply chain — from harvesting to dyeing and finishing — is held to strict criteria. Cole’s Review: I wasn’t sure how TomboyX would fit, but I tried the Bamboo Rib Boy Shorts in medium and 9″ Boxer Briefs. They’ve quickly become my favorite underwear. Both styles offer a snugger fit but with plenty of room where it’s needed. I love the ribbed bamboo texture of the boy shorts, which gives them a substantial, well-made feel that I feel confident will hold up over time. The briefs are made from a very soft, lightweight Tencel that is very comfortable, and they stayed in place all day.

Cole’s Review: I love the timeless shape and feel of these boxers. I tried their Men’s Organic Cotton Boxers in Natural in size medium and especially appreciate the length — they’re a little shorter than other boxers I’ve tried. The cotton is beautiful, and the button closure adds a thoughtful touch. With a thick, sturdy elastic waistband and a well-made feel overall, they seem like they’ll hold up well through plenty of washes.

The elastic feels sturdy enough to hold up well through washes, and the thicker stitching adds to their durable feel.

Cole’s Review: These Organic Cotton 4” Trunks are a really solid pair of underwear. I love the cotton’s thickness, and the small front pocket adds extra support — a thoughtful design detail. The elastic feels sturdy, and they stay comfortable without riding up. The navy color is beautiful, too.

Cole’s Review: I opted for the Hemp Boxer Brief in Palm Tree. The pattern feels like a homage to my California roots. At first, these boxers feel almost too tight, but after wearing them for a day, they mold to the body perfectly and stay put.

I found I needed to adjust the fabric when putting on tighter pants, but once they were in place, the boxers stayed comfortable all day without bunching up.

Cole’s Review: I tried the Core Icon Boxer Brief Shorts 2-Pack, and while I’m typically a fan of Organic Basics, this style wasn’t my favorite. The elastic is thin, and I wonder how well it will hold up through repeated washes. Also, the cut is flared and feels a little like wearing a skirt. The fabric is also thin and doesn’t offer much support. That said, I like the color, and they work well as pajamas.
