Your eyes are always looking. But when did you last look at them?

This month, all eyes are on one of our body’s most complex and interesting organs: the eye.

The eye can distinguish between 1 and 10 million colours, yet we only see about a sixth of them. The rest sits safely tucked into its socket.

It is designed for long-range and close-up vision, but these days it gets far too much of the latter, courtesy of our smartphones, computers and tablets. When we stare at them, our eyes and the muscles around them have to work harder than usual to constantly adjust to the light those screens emit. And when we ‘scroll’, the rapidly changing images and text leave our eyes strained and tired.

Do you ever experience dry, burning or red eyes?

Is your vision sometimes blurry by the end of the day?

Do you get headaches or neck and shoulder tension?

To keep working properly, our eyes need a constant supply of tears for lubrication. Artificial light, air conditioning, hormonal changes and stress make that harder to maintain.

How Long Will You Spend in Front of a Screen Today?

Here are 3 simple tips that will make a world of difference to your precious eyes:

Look Away

Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Closing your eyes for a few moments works too.

Blink

We normally blink about 15 times per minute, yet screen use can slow this to 5-7 times per minute! No wonder our eyes get tired and itchy. So, let’s bat those eyelids!

Exercise

Like any other muscle, our eyes need movement. Look up, look down, look right, then left, letting your eyes move, not your head.

Keep an eye on those precious eyes. Disconnect from your tech more often, reconnect with the wonders of those two remarkable gems, and dare to be the change you want to see in your organisation, your family, your community, and life.

Dare to Find Your Centre Again

You’ve reached that phase in life where:

  • your thermostat is more unpredictable than the weather
  • your brain is as foggy as the South Downs on a winter morning
  • your mood swings are as vertiginous as the pendulum ride on Brighton Pier

Old stories and past traumas often resurface during menopause, bringing unexpected emotional landscapes. Together, we can turn these unfamiliar territories into a gentle self-discovery, mastering your inner pressure cooker with grace!
